Normal functioning of all government offices and establishments in Manipur’s Tamenglong district was disrupted on Friday due to a strike called by the Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF).
The front launched the 5-day long stir since February 10 to express displeasure against the Manipur government over its alleged unkindly treatment towards the hill district.
Sources informed that all government offices including that of the Deputy Commissioner in the districts were forced to close down by strike supporters.
ZYF is agitated as the state government has neglected the Rs 36.26 crore construction of the district secretariat building, the front said.
Stating that it will continue the ongoing democratic agitation of closure of government establishments from February 20, the front warned that this time it will also ban all ongoing national international projects in Zeliangrong areas of the district until the Manipur government gives assurances to fulfill the demands.
Meanwhile, a large number of student bodies in Jiribam subdivision under Imphal East burned effigies of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Education Minister Moirangthem Okendro Singh and local MLA Thoudam Debendra Singh yesterday to press for their demand of converting Jiri College into a full-fledged government institution.
The stirring student organizations included All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), District Committee, Jiribam Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO), Jiribam & Tamenglong Branch, Zeliangrong Students’ Union (ZSU), All Manipur Bengali Students’ Organisation (AMBSO) and Muslim Students’ Organisation (MSO).
As part of the agitation, all government offices have been forced to shut down in the subdivision too since February 16.
