2 injured in alleged Clean Elections call repercussion

DIMAPUR, APRIL 27 (MExN): Two persons were injured in an alleged Clean Elections campaign repercussion in Mokokchung district. The incident reportedly occurred on April 24 at Merangkong village.  

A report citing eye witness account stated that on April 24 ten persons were “physically abused and assaulted” at the village for advocating the Clean Elections campaign of the NBCC and ABAM. The report alleged that they were summoned and assaulted by supporters of a political party and some youths of the village.  

Two of the persons, one a 60 year-old man, who were assaulted, had to be admitted to hospital, the reported alleged, while adding that one of them was admitted to a hospital in Dimapur and the other to a hospital in Jorhat.  

While there has so far been no official confirmation of the alleged incident, an official from Tuli when contacted stated that it was informed of an incident at Merangkong village on April 24. Following the receipt of the information, the official said that police personnel alongwith district administration officials went to the village to inquire only to be told by the villagers that no untoward incident as reported has occurred at the village. The police and district administration team returned to the village the next day but no information of or relating to the alleged was forthcoming, the official said, while adding that the villagers maintained that the village was only busy preparing for the upcoming Moatsü celebration.  

The official said that the Tuli police have not received any complaint as regards the alleged incident.
