The Joint Action Committee (JAC) spearheading various forms of agitations demanding justice for the 12-year-old girl student who was found dead in a controversial manner in her hostel room on July 18 last announced a seven-hour general strike in Manipur on August 9.

The decision to impose the bandh to be commenced from 5 am of August 9 till noon (12 noon) of the same day was resolved in a public meeting convened under the aegis of “JAC Against the Murder of Ningthoujam Babysana Chanu” at THAU Ground, Imphal.

While resolving giving the seven-hour general strike, the meeting also decided to impose a dawn to dusk bandh in the whole of Thangmeiband area on August 8 after a torch rally was held tonight at 7 pm.

The Thangmeiband area bandh will be commenced from 6 am and will be lasted till 6 pm of August 8, a press release of the JAC said.

While announcing the series of agitations to be launched in the coming days, the JAC alleged that the state government has failed to find out the culprit(s) behind the "murder" of the minor student.

The JAC alleged that Babysana was hung after being murdered.

Mention may be made that in connection with the death, Special Investigation Team (SIT) of state police has so far arrested five officials of the Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School including the founder cum principal Ph Landhoni and her son and daughter.

All of them are currently in jail after the court remanded them to judicial custody.

N Babysana, a student of Class-VII at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School was found dead by hanging in the dormitory of the hostel where she stayed in the morning of July 18.

Alleging foul-play, the JAC along with pressure groups including student bodies have been demanding booking of culprit(s) for the end of justice.

On Wednesday, a sit-in-protest pressing the state government to deliver justice to the family of the victim student was held at various parts.

Members of the Tingjinpong Eveninglories Prayer Centre also joined the protest by staging a sit-in-protest at RNBA complex at Tarung in Imphal West district.

Talking to media Promoter of TEPC Panti Gonmei urged the government to take up steps to deliver justice in the death of Babysana while announcing that TEPC will extend all kinds of supports to the JAC.

She alleged that the law enforcing agencies have shown their incompetency when they failed to come up with any clue to the "murder" of the student even after 21 days since the incident occurred.

Panti Gonmei also said that students are sent to learn and not to be killed, harassed, tortured or insulted mentally or physically.

She then demanded that the culprits should be punished with "iron hand" to eradicate the evils once and for all.

Panti warned the school authorities, teachers and wardens should stop mental and physical tortures which are not allowed by the new education system.
