BJP demand Biren resignation over son’s deeds

Imphal | March 28 : A Manipur cabinet decision has been taken Monday to hand over the investigation into the gruesome killing of a youth by cabinet minister N Biren’s son on March 20. The Manipur unit of BJP has however intensified its shrill demand for resignation of N Biren on moral ground.
In a cabinet meeting, also attended by Youth Affairs and Sports minister who is also taking charge of  Irrigation and Flood Control department N Biren after having skipped attending the rest of the budget session since his son has been indicted and arrested for the March 20 homicide, a decision has been arrived at to entrust the investigation into the crime involving the son of the legislator to the CBI, confirmed a source here.
The high profile incident of homicide occurred at about 2 pm on March 20 near Ghari village in Imphal where the 21 years old Irom Roger Singh was shot dead in broad daylight by N Ajay Meitei, the son of IFCD minister N Biren Singh. Roger was traveling with four of his associates towards Imphal Airport along Teddim road on a Hyundai I-20. Later at about 2:45 pm on the same day, Lokendro, father of Roger, submitted a written complaint to Singjamei police station about the incident where his son was shot at by an unknown person on a fleeing black Bolero Jeep bearing registration number 2417. A case was registered under FIR no. 131(3)2011 under section 302/34 IPC and 27 Arms Act.
Further investigations revealed the involvement of 21 years old N Ajay Meitei, the son of N Biren Singh, minister IFCD, and his four other associates who were traveling on the day of the crime on a tinted black Bolero owned by the minister.
Ajay Meitei along with his four associates surrendered to SDPO Singjamei police station on the intervening night of March 20 and 21. He has admitted to having committed the crime with a licensed gun before the police. The police had recovered the pistol with 6 live rounds and the Bolero used in the commission of the crime.
In relation to the cabinet decision, the State unit president of BJP Shantikumar lambasted the government before the press at its office here, questioning the rational behind the decision.
“Ajay Meitei who shot I Roger to his death in cold blood has admitted to having committed the crime, what then is the need for the institution of an investigation by CBI and other such independent body,” he asked, suggesting that “the court should simply give its verdict based on the available evidence and the admission by the accused himself.”
“Minister N Biren should therefore resign from his official responsibility while his son should be handed out a capital punishment or a lifetime imprisonment verdict,” he prodded on.
Shantikumar also demanded for clarification from the chief minister on the case involving the shooting of the AG, Koteshore, by a cabinet minister in his government which has largely been consigned to history. He went on to seek revelation on the identity of a minister’s wife who was caught sometimes back at Tulihal Airport with a battery of munitions in her luggage.
