Inter Club Badminton Championship in Mokokchung

The Mokokchung District Badminton Association will be organizing the Mokokchung Inter Club Badminton Championship 2017 at Indoor Stadium, Mokokchung from September 28-30 where 10 teams representing 8 clubs in the district will be competing.  

It is the second edition after the first inter club tournament was successfully held last year. The first and only one of its kind, the Inter Club Badminton Championship is being organized with the objective of popularizing and promoting badminton in the district.  

According to MDBA officials, sharing of responsibility of nurturing young badminton players, promoting badminton as a professional sport and generating revenue for MDBA are the other objectives behind organizing the championship. MDBA officials also said that the championship would primarily focus on promoting the junior category and would provide due recognition to young outstanding players.  

Sponsored by TATA Trust’s North East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) and NLC India Ltd., the total prizes to be won at the tournament will be worth Rs.1 lakh. All matches will be officiated by state umpires with Bendang Chang, national umpire, as chief referee.  

Top shuttlers from the state as well as some others from the region representing various clubs have confirmed their participation in the championship.  

Chubanungba, convener of the organizing committee while addressing a press conference at the badminton stadium here today said that badminton clubs from Ungma, Chuchuyimpang, Chungtia, Khensa, Longsa, Impur and Mopungchuket villages along with one from Mokokchung town will be competing in the tournament.  

Teams are allowed to hire or rope in a maximum of three players from anywhere within or outside of Mokokchung district. The championship with be played in Under 13, Under 15, Under 17, Junior, 35+ and 45+ categories under league cum knock-out systems.
