KU set to provide relief to Konyak people in Myanmar

Seeks immediate clearance from Central and State Governments

DIMAPUR, MAY 2 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) is setting up relief stock of essential commodities for distribution to Konyak people in Myanmar.

A press release from the KU media cell therefore appealed for the Central and State Governments for immediate clearance so that the commodities can reach the people in the Sagaing division of Myanmar, who have been having a hard time accessing essential services due to the lockdown of the international border.

The KU said that Mon, within the administrative jurisdiction under Nagaland state, is the most vulnerable zone since it shares borders with Assam, Arunachal and Myanmar. However, such political lining does not confine to its customary and social dominance/influence which is spread far across and beyond, it observed.

It further expressed concern that the lockdown imposed under Sagaing division (Myanmar) is causing untold restriction/deprivation, especially within Konyak customary jurisdiction.

“Lack of road communication, non-availability of basic health services in this region seems like God’s dis-owned region on earth. The cries 'Help us or Free us' is igniting out louder. Hence, while considering our world as a global village, let us learn to strive as humans. Let’s leave aside politics and be humane to see another human suffering across the border,” the KU appealed.

Towards this, the KU informed that it is setting up a relief stock of essential commodities through people’s generosity. It also appreciated Paiwang Konyak, Minister-in-Charge for Mon District and Pohwang Konyak, Advisor for “being the torchbearers on this very mission.”

It meanwhile informed that the KU had also officially apprised the concerned district stakeholders and the Assam Rifles during a visit of the IGAR (North) here at Mon.

The union reiterated its appeals to all concerned authorities to expedite for official clearance to distribute relief materials.

It added that the union, “in spite of every available possibility in reaching out, is rather seeking for official clearance to respect the political sentiments of the Government.” It hoped that both the Central and State Governments would understand the social linkage and customary sentiments of the Konyak Naga tribe.
