Normal academic atmosphere in government colleges across Manipur was disturbed for the third consecutive day on September 26 as teachers commenced its stir three days ago.

After the two-day mass casual leave, teachers of government colleges in Manipur staged a mass sit-in-protest in Imphal’s Keishampat Junction on Thursday.

The teachers staged the protest under the aegis of Federation of Government College Teachers’ Association (FEGOCTA) Manipur. Teachers of almost all government colleges took part in the protest.

The teachers are demanding immediate implementation of 7th Pay and UGC Regulations 2018.

Talking to reporters, FEGOCTA general secretary, Dr N Somorendro Singh said that the stir which the association was carrying out will not be suspended until a positive response from the government comes forth.

With the end of the September 23 deadline set by the association to the state government to consider their demands, FEGOCTA had announced a series of stir to be launched by the teachers few days ago.

As announced by the association, teachers affiliated to FEGOCTA took mass casual leaves on September 24 and 25 which were followed by the Thursday’s mass sit-in-protest.

The general secretary of the association claimed that the mass casual leave stir had affected the academic atmosphere in almost all the colleges across the state. He added that teachers are unhappy when the academic atmosphere of the colleges is affected. However, the teachers are left with no other option but to resort to such stir as the government remains indifferent to their plight.

“The demand of the teachers is genuine. We will not retreat from the ongoing strike until FEGOCTA signs a concrete agreement with the government,” Dr Somorendro Singh said.

He then said that the Thursday’s sit-in-protest was the second phase of the series of stirs which the association had announced earlier.

As per announcement made on September 23 last, the teachers will further stage the sit-in-protests in front of their respective colleges for two days, on September 27 and 28.
