While strongly protesting the scrapping of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on August 13 said that the move of the BJP-led NDA government has created apprehension about the fate of Article 371.

Addressing a press conference at MPCC office at BT Road, Imphal, MPCC president Gaikhangam said that scrapping Article 371 cannot be ruled out as BJP has been doing whatever it wants, taking utmost advantage of majority in the Parliament.

The BJP-led NDA government had also divided the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories - Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The move had reduced the statehood status of Jammu and Kashmir into Union territories.

In Manipur, too, some political parties welcomed the move of the Centre, the MPCC president said. "If such thing happens in Manipur, will these parties welcome it?" he asked.

Abrogation of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir were done without the consent of the people of that state, "and in a similar manner the abrogation of Article 371 cannot be ruled out if one looks into the dictatorial attitude of the BJP", the Congress leader said.

"Who knows the BJP led NDA government may bifurcate Manipur the way it did it in Jammu and Kashmir," Gaikgangam expressed.

"The Centre's move is a great threat to the smaller states like Manipur", he added.
