The Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Tuesday passed a resolution revoking an earlier decision to sever ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state.

The resolution was taken during the emergency meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council (CEC) at the Central Office in Kohima on January 23.

“As desired by different sections of people regarding review of the NPF decision of severing ties with the BJP… the CEC considered it necessary to review the matter and resolved to maintain the earlier status of having an alliance with the BJP,” the resolution stated.

The decision to revoke was taken considering the urgency to create a congenial atmosphere for the ongoing political dialogue between the Government of India and the Naga National Workers (NSCN-IM/NNPGs) and the reconciliation that has taken place in the party, the resolution added.

It however insisted that the party was prompted to take such decision “to protect the constitutional rights of the citizens at a time when there were misunderstandings from within the party.”

In this connection, the NPF CEC also appealed to the NSCN (K) to listen to the voice of the people and resume the ceasefire with the Government of India and join the political dialogue.

Meanwhile, the CEC endorsed the resolution of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly for solution to the Naga Political issue before election which was adopted on December 15, 2017.

The CEC also upheld the leadership of Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü as party president and reiterated the decision of the NPF Parliamentary Party to go to the poll with TR Zeliang as Chief Ministerial candidate.

Both party president and Chief Minister Zeliang were empowered to decide the party ticket if the Working Committee differs in opinion on any constituency/candidature. “However, win-ability and loyalty to party should be the main criteria for awarding the party ticket,” the CEC’s resolution stated.

With regard to the seat sharing proposed by the BJP for the ensuing general election, the NPF CEC stated it had agreed in principle but details have to be worked out through proper exercises according to the merit of each case.

Thanking the people of Nagaland for reposing its faith on the party to run the affairs of the state for the past 15 years, the NPF CEC appealed the citizens of Nagaland to continue its support even in the days to come.
