A taxi (Tata Sumo) proceeding to Mokokchung from Tobu, Mon district met with a tragic accident on January 4, killing one passenger and injuring nine others. The nine injured passengers were admitted at the IMDH, Mokokchung.
According to Changtongya Police and Mokokchung Traffic Police, the accident took place around 8:00 am near Longchara Colony in Changtongya Town. There were 11 occupants in the taxi, including the driver when it skidded off the road and fell some 60-70 feet. The deceased passenger was a 21 year-old man, who was believed to have been killed on impact. The nine others, who were injured, were administered first-aid at the nearby Community Health Centre in Changtongya town and later taken to the IMDH in Mokokchung town.
The police further informed that the driver was absconding and investigation was on to ascertain the cause of the accident. The driver was said to have gone missing from the site right after the accident.
