The launching programme of the 10-year celebration of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) commenced at Phek town under the aegis of District Administration and SANKALP-District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW) on January 22.
Vilenuo K Thisa, District Mission Coordinator of DHEW, Phek, gave a PowerPoint presentation on the implementation of the BBBP scheme under Phek district for the current financial year. She highlighted that, under the initiative and able leadership of Deputy Commissioner Phek, John Tsulise Sangtam, who is also the Chairman of Mission Shakti, the BBBP scheme is being implemented by SANKALP-District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Mission Shakti.
She stated that several activities have been conducted, including special drives and awareness campaigns on various components of Mission Shakti (women-centric schemes), menstrual health and hygiene awareness, distribution of sanitary napkins, and baby gift hampers to district hospitals, CHCs, and PHCs to encourage institutional deliveries. Other initiatives included organizing medical camps, skill development training, felicitating women and girl champions, supporting scholarship programs for needy girl students, and ensuring convergence with line departments for the effective implementation of the scheme in Phek district.
Meanwhile, Mechietsho, Extra Assistant Commissioner (EAC) of Phek, delivered the keynote address. He shared his experiences of working with the scheme and remarked that the BBBP scheme is vital and beneficial, especially for women and the girl child.
He also urged the implementing agencies to coordinate with all levels of administration to ensure better implementation and delivery at the grassroots level in Phek district.
The programme included the reading of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao pledge by all participants. It concluded with a signature campaign against gender-based discrimination and sex selection.
