Banks, select schools businesses directed to remain closed

The bye-election to the 10th Northern Angami –I Assembly Constituency will take place on July 29, where 16, 235 voters are expected to exercise their franchise in 25 polling stations. The polling will start from 7:00 AM till 4:00 PM. Two candidates- Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu (NPF) and Kekhrie Yhome (Independent) are in the fray for this by-election. Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) including Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) will be used in this bye-election.
Meanwhile, the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) administrator Kethosituo Sekhose has directed all business establishment including schools and institutions under ward No. 1 (High school), Ward No. 2 (Bayavü) and Ward No. 3 (North Block) of the Kohima municipality to remain closed on July 29 in view of the poll.
Abhihjit Sinha, Chief Electoral Officer Nagaland will address a press conference after the end of the polling at the CEO’s office on July 29 at 6:00 PM. All media persons have been requested to attend the same.
Deputy Commissioner & Returning Officer, Kohima Rajesh Soundararajan has also issued an order directing that all banks (including private banks) under Kohima HQ to remain closed on July 29 in view of the By-Election. The Deputy Commissioner also informed that if there are any electors of 10 Northern Angami -1 A/C working in any Bank Branches in other parts of the Kohima District, such person shall be given paid holiday to exercise their franchise.
SC issues notice to ECI on by-election
DIMAPUR, JULY 28 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has informed that the Supreme Court today admitted the Special Leave Petition filed by NPCC with regard to the conduct of by-election to 10 Northern Angami-I Assembly Constituency and issued Notice to the Election Commission of India that the result of by-election shall be subject to the outcome of the matter.
A press note from the media cell, NPCC said that the party had filed a Special Leave Petition in the Supreme Court against holding of the by-election, “since it contravenes the provisions under Section 255 of the Representations of the Peoples Act, 1951.”
The particular section, the Congress pointed out states: “Notwithstanding anything contained in Section 147, Section 149, Section 150 and Section 151, a by-election for filing any vacancy referred to in as of the said Sections shall be held within a period of six months from the date of occurrence of vacancy. Provided that nothing contained in this Section shall apply if – (a) the remainder of the term of a member in relation to a vacancy is less than one year; or (b) the Election Commission in consultation with the Central Government certifies that it is difficult to hold bye-election within the said period.”
