11th All Sumi Chess C’ship 2024 kicks off in Dimapur

Dimapur, October 10 (MExN): The 11th All Sumi Chess Championship 2024, organized by the Sumi Chess Association Nagaland (SCAN), officially commenced today at the Tourist Lodge in Dimapur. The championship is set to run for three days, concluding on October 12.

The inaugural ceremony was graced by Y. Vizheto Shohe, the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of Tokiye-Zunheboto, representing the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland. In his inaugural speech, Shohe highlighted the significance of chess in life, emphasizing its role in empowering global leaders to make informed decisions for their nations. He pointed out that countries such as the USA, China, and Russia are renowned for their strong chess traditions, which contribute to their economic and social advancements. He noted that India is also among these influential chess-playing nations.

Shohe remarked, “Chess is the only game that significantly contributes to the mental and cognitive development of individuals.”

The event featured a performance by country singer Kito Swu, who captivated the audience with a rendition of Don Williams’ “Back to Simple Things.” The program included a vote of thanks delivered by Toikhu Awomi, Advisor to SCAN, while Ikiho Rochill, a former president of SCAN, led the invocation prayer. Mughaho Awomi, an International Arbiter, provided remarks regarding the championship.

The ceremony was chaired by Mughato K. Kiba, General Secretary of SCAN. This year’s championship aligns with the upcoming 25th anniversary of SCAN’s inception, to be celebrated next year.

A total of 35 players are competing for the championship title across three categories: Open, Under-14, and Under-18. Among the participants, the youngest player is Vikito Y. Swu, just 9 years old, representing Bethesda Higher Secondary School in Dimapur.
