12th NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy makes colourful start

Kohima | October 1 : The 12th edition of NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy 2011 has made a colourful start here this evening at the Kohima Local Ground with 57 teams joining the tournament.
In the inaugural match, Lamkang Students’ Union (LSU) defeated Eastern Naga Students’ Association (ENSA) 3-0. Thangtinlen (17) scored all 3 goals for LSU.
This tournament is organized annually by Angami Students’ Union (ASU), in reminiscence and tribute to two students’ comrades Lt. Kekuojalie Sachü & Lt. Vikhozo Yhoshü, who made the supreme sacrifice in the year 1986, while on the duty call of the Naga Students’ Federation in its fight for justice and rights of the students’ community..
Inaugurating the tournament, Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) speaker Kiyanilie Peseyie said in modern world, games and sports play a vital role in creating cordial relationship amongst the various races, religion and tribes of different states, creating goodwill feeling of oneness in the minds of the human kind.
“To live a meaningful live, man must aim at his physical, spiritual and intellectual development in a harmonious way. The sports and games talent is either genetically gifted or there is distinct geographical advantages for excellence in particular discipline. Particularly, the north east region with its tough terrains and physically high demanding life style has the potential to produce very good athletes and sports personalities of national and international repute,” NLA speaker said.
Peseyie said that he have every expectation that this event will provide ample opportunity to all the teams who are participating to demonstrate their talents and the quality and spirit of sportsmanship of excellence.
Referring to sports and games promotion and development, the Peseyie said “it is worth mentioning that the north eastern region will have to take full advantage of the strong bond shared between the states. This will greatly benefit the region and contribute immensely toward better understanding and closer cooperation between the sister states. We will have to build on each other’s strengths and grow as a family if we are to pose as a challenge at the national and international area.”
He said sports and games also help develop the spirit of joy of comradeship and fair dealing with fellow beings. It inculcates in a person the spirit of sportsmanship, punctuality, regularity, team spirit, leadership and obedience to rules. It also teaches the joy of tolerance, spirit of fairness and significance of discipline in a man’s life. A good sportsman is as such regarded as the fine specimen of mankind.
Thus, he said, in the context of present conflict-ridden society, games and sports can play a very edifying role in forging harmony and sense of fellow feeling among mankind. Because games and sports know no geographical or political boundary, development of human faculties being its prime motto.
The sportsmen can play the role of ambassador both in war and peace, he said adding that many nation have established diplomatic relations through the media of sports and games breaking even the psychological barriers in between them.
He appealed particularly to young boys and girls to take games and sports in the right earnest along with academic studies to live a worthy and happy life, a balanced development of intellectual, spiritual and physical faculties is indispensable.
He also thanked ASU and the organizing committee of the 12th NSF Martyrs’ Memorial Trophy 2011 for their sagacity in organizing this event who stood as a driving force as they have realized the significance of the sports and games and its guiding principles.
“In the present world it’s the sportsman who is most popular bringing name and fame to their state and the country and many countries now declare their best sportsman as their national assets conferring high honour and esteem upon them.”
Earlier, ASU president Voto Neikha delivered welcome address while Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) president Kelhouneizo Yhome shared solidarity note. Special number/item from Mezhür Higher Secondary School Kohima and Mt. Hermon School, Kohima was an added attraction of the inaugural function.
The tournament will go on till October 29. The champion will fetch a cash prize of Rs. 1, 25,000 while the runners -up will pocket Rs. 80,000. Prize money for losing quarter-finalist is set at Rs. 6000 and semi-finalists at Rs. 10,000.
