Wokha | February 3
The curtains came down on the qualifying round of the 15th Lotha Football Championship on a high note at the public ground, Wokha, as thrilling contests, late goals and decisive victories marked the final day of group-stage action.
The opening encounter saw Airfield Colony FC and Star Madrid FC share the spoils in a pulsating 2–2 draw. Star Madrid FC appeared to be cruising after Mhabemo found the net in the 30th minute, followed by Chumben’s strike six minutes later. However, Airfield Colony FC showed resilience, with Yanchibemo reducing the deficit in the 38th minute before a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser (70+1) ensured both sides walked away with a point.
In the second fixture, Flamingo FC made an early statement as Nitova scored inside the first five minutes. The lead, however, was short-lived as Yon Sporting Club responded almost immediately through Sentisang in the 7th minute. Sentisang went on to complete his brace early in the second half, while Renpithung’s late goal in the 69th minute confirmed a convincing 3–1 win for Yon Sporting Club, underlining their status as tournament favourites.
The final match of the day delivered one of the most entertaining performances of the qualifying stage. Niro Range FC drew first blood through Zuthungo in the 21st minute, but Nitsüyan FC staged a dominant second-half comeback. Yiben Ezung struck twice in quick succession, including a well-timed header from a corner in the 63rd minute. An unfortunate own goal by NRFC in the 68th minute compounded their woes, before Yhoto Lohe capped off the night with a stoppage-time goal to seal a commanding 4–1 victory for Nitsüyan Yan FC.
With the group stage now concluded, the championship moves into the knockout phase. The first quarter-final matches, scheduled for February 4, will see Friends Club take on Tsumang FC, while Nitsüyan Yan FC lock horns with Flamingo FC in what promises to be an exciting clash.
