The 16th Football Mongmong Tournament kicked off today here at Kiphire local ground with Deputy Commissioner Kiphire, M Shayung Phom as the opening guest.

 

The tournament, organised by Kiphire Area Students Union (KASU), is held annually as a tribute to Late Sepithong Sangtam, an erstwhile Head GB Kiphire District.

 

Altogether 13 clubs are participating in the tournament concluding September 6. 

 

In the first match today,  Legends FC defeated Yeye Sports Club by 2-1.

 

Meanwhile, gracing the occasion as the opening Shayung congratulated KASU for organizing the tournament saying that such tournament will help youths to explore and showcase their talent.

 

He pointed out that thought the name  of the tournament is ' Football Mongmong Tournament,' it has to be kept in mind that the tournament does not belong to any particular community, caste, gender or religion but it belong to all, irrespective of race and culture.

 

“This football festival should bring people together in a true spirit of brotherhood and sportsmanship, let the festival be a festival of football,” he added.

 

Stating that while youths are trained in various field, the lack of infrastructure was hindering the progress, Shayung expressed hope that organizing such kind of tournament will give platforms to the youths to further hone their talent.

 

Encouraging players to give their best, he  urged upon the players to take the opportunity to learn from their fellow players as it is through sports friendship is created and barriers are broken.

 

Earlier welcome address was given by Throngdiba Sangtam President KASU, while a special number was presented b by Vero. The program was led by Adiba Sangtam.

 

Reading out short speech on behalf of Late Sepithong, family members thanked the organizers for paying tribute to the departed GB.
