As Nagaland awaits polling day with bated breath, the police in Mokokchung recovered assault rifles in the violence-prone 28 Koridang Assembly seat on Sunday evening. The recovery was made at Alichen, which also happens to be the battalion headquarters of the 2nd NAP.
The circumstances under which the firearms were recovered were not disclosed, with the police only stating that 28 persons were detained in connection to the weapons.
ADGP (Law & Order), Sandeep Tamgadge told The Morung Express that the incident occurred at around 4:30-5:00 PM, Sunday, during which 2 AK-47 assault rifles and a pistol were confiscated.
“We have detained around 28 persons after conducting a combing operation,” the ADGP said. He did not comment on the likely affiliation of the detained individuals to any of the 4 candidates from the constituency.
Whether the weapons were caught in transit or recovered during the “combing operation” was also not specified. Queried on the likely involvement of cadres from the Naga Political Groups, Tamgadge replied that this aspect of the investigation cannot be ascertained at this stage.
