Dimapur | January 9
The two-day ‘March Against AFSPA’ from Dimapur to Kohima, covering nearly 70 kilometre will begin on Monday morning at 6:00 am from Supermarket Dimapur.
After a night halt in Piphema, the march will resume on 6:00 am, January 11, and head towards Kohima, where they would be received by public and other organisations, before proceeding to the Raj Bhavan to submit a memorandum.
Everything has been prepared and we are ready for the march, an organiser informed on Sunday. The march is being organised by like-minded citizens to protest the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958.
While there were concerns regarding the march due to new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) announced by the State Government effective from January 10 in the wake of emergence of COVID-19 omicron variant, it was informed that the walk designated as “Walkathon” by the district administration, has been granted security clearance with certain conditions.
The organisers should maintain public peace and tranquility during the walk and must not affect the free flow of traffic, said that permit from the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur. Another permit from Deputy Commissioner also stipulated all participants must be asymptomatic and fully vaccinated as well as observe appropriate COVID-19 behavour.
The RAT Tests for prospective participants were also conducted on Dimapur District Hospital on Sunday.
Earlier on Saturday, the organisers stated that the march was “purely non-violent and peaceful” and urged participants to listen and obey authorities, not to indulge in violence, adding, “We shall silently march till the end.”
Apart from the starting point, volunteers are expected to join the march along the way in a show of solidarity.
