21st NSF Martyrs Day observed

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) today observed its 21st Martyrs Day here at the NSF Martyrs Park in honour and remembrance of those students who sacrificed their lives for the betterment of the younger generation.

Late Kekuojalie Sachu and late Vikhozo Yoshu sacrificed their lives for the cause of the younger generation, said NSF president Phushika Awomi, adding that it had shown the spirit of patriotism and courage.

Their sacrifice is source of our inspiration, he said adding every year, the NSF observes 20 March as Black Day to pay respect and remember the heroic act of our great leaders.

On March 20 1986, late Kekuojalie Sachu and late Vikhozo Yoshu laid down their lives for the noble cause. They were shot down by the state police in Kohima to contain the larger voice by the then government. Besides their dead bodies, hundreds were also injured in the hands of police, during peaceful demonstration against the state government decision on extension of Disturbed Area Belt from 5-20 km along Indo-Burma border and the induction of IPS cadre in Nagaland.

Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) joint secretary Lochumbeni, Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) co-convenor A Keneth, and Angami Students’ Union (ASU) president Medo Yhokha also spoke on the occasion.

The function was chaired by NSF Federal Assembly speaker WH Maring while Rev Koda, pastor, Mao Baptist Church Kohima said a prayer.

Kohima Village Students’ Union presented a special number. Laying of wreaths, observance of one minute silence also marked the function. The function concluded with vote of thanks by NSF general secretary Elu Ndang.
