The 25th Classic Cup 2019 under the aegis of Classic Club Kohima got underway here today at Kohima Local Ground under the theme “Together we can.”


Rustic Boys FC Thizami defeated New Reserve Youth Organization in the opening match of the tournament.


Nramlumbe, Lohrii, Dwale and Eyangau connected a goal each for Rustic Boys FC while New Reserve Youth Organization gained a solitary goal through Joel.


Gracing the inaugural ceremony as the special guest, Akumla Chuba, director, Youth Resources & Sports Nagaland urged upon the stakeholders to come forward and joins hands together for progress and development of football in Nagaland.


She said that the department has been trying its best to scout young footballers by conducting coaching camps.


“Sport is a unifying factor, bringing people of different caste, races and nations together,” she said.


She called upon the sportspersons to remain dedicated and discipline in their search for excellence.


Commenting on the sports scenario in Nagaland, she expressed happiness that Nagas are doing well in many disciplines.


“What was once just a mere hobby is growing into a profession with many sportspersons reaching national level in many disciplines,” the director maintained.


She appreciated the Classic Club for organizing the Classic Cup since 1995.


She said that today, the Classic Club has become a household name not only in the football arena, but also in philanthropic activities.


She also lauded the club for its various activities from beautification programme in and around Kohima to creating awareness programme for conservation of environment, conducting health camps, peace run and helping the poor and the needy.


She also appreciated the Club for instituting the prestigious Classic Award which started in 1999 in recognition of individuals/organizations excelling in different fields.


Classic Club president K. Neibou Sekhose said that the club is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a year-long programme with the theme “Together we can,” and the 25th edition of Classic Cup 2019 is one of the main events.


“The game of football has the maximum popular appeal in our state and it is in the fitness of things that the atmosphere in our state should be fully surcharged with emotion and excitement that the game of football is apt to provide,” he said.


Sekhose said that to encourage the players and well wishers, the Club has doubled the prize money in it jubilee year and added few attractive awards for the players, coaches, managers, officials and photographers etc.


The Champion will carry a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh while the runner-up will get Rs. 2 lakh. Losing semi finalist will bet Rs. 50,000.


The player of the tournament will get Motor Bike & Certificate while a bicycle each will be given to Best Goalkeeper, Best Defender, Best Midfield, Best Forward and Highest Scorer.


The most participated team will receive Rs. 25,000 along with citation. The Best Coach & Manager will get Rs. 5000 each. Referee of the Tournament will also be awarded with Rs. 5000.


Other special prizes include; Best Discipline Team- Rs, 10,000, Most loveable player- Rs. 5000 and photo shoot of the Tournament- Rs.10, 000.


Altogether. 28 teams registered for this tournament, which will continue till November 23.
