Mon, July 22 (MExN): A total of 29 shops located around educational institutions in Mon Town were found selling tobacco products and penalised during an enforcement drive of COTPA 2003 on July 22.

The drive for the effective implementation of the Act was carried out under National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP) by a team led by the Program’s District Nodal Officer, Dr I Simon Sumi and District Consultant,  Nyeamying Konyak, informed a DIPR report.

The team consisted of representatives from the District Administration, Excise department, Police department and Konyak Students’ Union (KSU) Mon.

Tobacco products seized by the team were later destroyed at the dumping area of Mon Town, the report added.

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA), among others, restricts sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions.
