The 2nd Kohima District Chess Championship 2021, organized by Kohima District Chess Association (KDCA) under the aegis of Nagaland Chess Association got underway here at CANSSEA Building on October 28.
Visanyüzo Kuotsu, founder and first president KDCA formally inaugurated the tournament and urged the players to maintain purity of the international game. Kuotsu, who represented the state at national and international Chess championships for over 20 years from 2005-2013 encouraged the players to respect the sport. According to him, despite a few claiming the championship titles, all participants will have equal rewards as participants learn from the competition and winning and losing is just part of the game.
KDCA President Kedihoto Puro said that Chess is likely to be introduced as a subject in schools in years to come. He maintained that this would go a long way in providing scope for chess instructors in the educational institutions.
The tournament is being conducted on Swiss League System of 7 rounds under FIDE rules and regulations. A total of 21 players joined the tournament with Neipedezo Metha (8 years) and Sede Nagi (61 years) registered as youngest and oldest player respectively.
In general category, the champion will fetch a cash prize of Rs 15,000, 2nd- Rs 10,000, 3rd- Rs. 7000, 4th- Rs 5000, Rs 2000 each for 4th-10 position holder. The champion under 14 years category will be awarded with Rs 6000, 2nd- Rs 4000, 3rd- Rs 3000 and 4th – Rs 2000. The tournament will continue till October 30.
