The five-day-long 38th Meet 2025 of the Phek District Sports Association (PDSA) commenced today at Phek Town, with Nagaland’s Power & Parliamentary Affairs Minister, KG Kenye, as the special guest.
In his inaugural address, Kenye emphasized that “the world of sports is the most exciting aspect of human life.” Reflecting on competition across various sports, he stated, “We must remain vigilant to defend our achievements and also challenge ourselves to set even better records.”
He further noted that every year and at every level, there is a marked improvement, as new heights and limits are continuously reached.
The minister acknowledged that Phek District is rich in sporting talent, saying, “We have a gift here that not everyone in this state, or even in this nation, possesses.” However, he lamented the inadequacy of sports facilities, stating that while sport requires not just practice but also technology and proper infrastructure, Nagaland’s resources are very limited.
“We are facing a significant challenge because the state lacks financial resources,” he explained. “Our government struggles with financial difficulties, and as a result, the Department of Sports & Youth Resources cannot fully tap into the human resources we have.”
Kenye emphasized that despite Nagaland’s natural sporting potential, the lack of adequate resources has hindered the development of athletes. “We are no less than anyone in the world, but the costs associated with sports continue to rise,” he said. “Our economy must grow to meet these financial demands.”
He further stated that it is the government’s role to provide support to athletes, as other states with more resources are able to sponsor, train, and nurture their sportspersons to represent their districts, states, and the nation.
The minister expressed regret that Nagaland has not been able to fully support and groom its athletes as they deserve. “We hope that someday, the government will fulfill its role and provide the necessary facilities and infrastructure to bring out the best in our sportspersons,” he said.
Kenye also congratulated all the medal winners at regional, national, and international levels, calling them “ambassadors of our state and people, who have introduced our community to the world.”
Earlier, PDSA president Nezosa Tetseo delivered the presidential address and mentioned that PDSA will celebrate its golden jubilee in 2027.
The inaugural ceremony was chaired by PDSA general secretary Riipfuzo Puro, while PDSA sports secretary Punüru Nienu administered the oath to the participating teams.
The meet will conclude on February 8, with NPF Legislature Party leader Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu, MLA, as the guest of honor.
Meanwhile, Venuzo Dawhuo set a new record in the discus throw with a distance of 41.66 meters, surpassing his previous record of 38.42 meters set in 2021.
On Day 1, Chozuba Area Sports Association led the medal tally with 15 medals (8 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze). Chokri Area Games and Sports Association followed in second place with 14 medals (6 gold, 7 silver, and 1 bronze), and Phek Area Sports Association secured third place with 8 medals (2 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze).
