The WDSA-Sepak inaugurated the third edition of the Wokha District Inter-School Sepaktakraw Tournament at Public Ground, Wokha, on Tuesday
Addressing the gathering as the special guest, Rhanbemo Odyuo, President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wokha unit commended the Wokha District Sepaktakraw Association (WDSA-Sepak) for its consistent efforts in promoting sports and organising the inter-school tournament.
He lauded the association’s achievements in producing several national and state-level players within a short period since its inception.
Encouraging the young participants to play with dedication and sportsmanship, Odyuo urged them to aspire towards representing Nagaland and the nation. He also appealed to parents to support their children’s sporting endeavours, noting that sports not only foster unity and self-reliance but also bring pride and laurels to the community.
He further informed that the BJP Wokha unit will host the Sansad Khel Mahotsav at the same venue on November 15 and invited students to actively participate in the one-day sports event.
The special guest extended his best wishes to all participants, institutions, and organisers for a successful tournament.
The inaugural programme was chaired by Achanbeni Kikon, while Sr Maria of St. Peter’s School, Longsa, invoked blessings for the event. A special song was presented by Mhabeni Kikon, a Class IX student of Mt. Sinai School, Wokha.
The players’ oath was administered by T Zuchanthung Ezung, Vice President of WDSA-Sepak, followed by the official declaration of the tournament by the special guest.
Earlier, in his welcome address, WDSA-Sepak president T Thungchibemo Lotha highlighted the association’s journey and achievements over the past four years. He noted the steady progress made in sending students to state-level competitions and organising various sporting activities to promote Sepaktakraw in the district. Lotha also encouraged schools and parents to support young talents, citing the sport’s growing recognition and opportunities for advancement.
This year’s edition features participation from seven schools, competing in 30 matches across different categories U-14 boys and girls, and senior boys and girls in the Regu event (three players per side).
The tournament will culminate on November 12 with a closing and prize distribution ceremony, where Dr Thungdemo Kyong, chief of Team Metamorphosis (NGO) and honorary executive member of WDSA-Sepak, will grace the occasion as the guest of honour.
