The fifth edition of the Mokokchung Inter-ward Football Tournament organized by Marepkong Youth Association (MYA) began on 12 March at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung. The inaugural programme of the tournament was graced by Mayangnungba, President NDPP, Mokokchung Region as the guest of honour. This year’s the tournament is held under the theme “Arise as one.”
Mayangnungba praised the Marepkong Youth Association for the noble initiative and efforts to bring the many wards of Mokokchung together through the wonderful game of football. He also highlighted the various avenues that the Nagaland government has provided for empowering the young, particularly in the field of sports. He encouraged the players to participate in true sportsmanship and to pursue sport not only as a hobby, but also as a source of livelihood.
The first match of the tournament was played between Artang ward and Marepkong ward where Artang trashed Marepkong with 7 goals to nil. The second match was played between Yimyu ward and Alempang ward which ended in a draw 1-1. The last match of the day was played between Penli ward and Majakong ward which also ended in a draw 2-2.
13 wards of Mokokchung Town are participating in the tournament and the Tournament will culminate on March 23.
