KOHIMA, DECEMBER 9 (MExN): The 62nd session of the biannual Games and Sports Meet 2024 of the Khulazu Bawu Village Youth Organisation under Phek district began on Monday at the village’s local ground.
The inaugural session was graced by Keduve Keyho, PS to Advisor CAWD & Taxes. In his address, he said that under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the state has been actively promoting sports to enable athletes to compete at national and international levels. He further encouraged sportspersons to consider sports as a serious career, citing the recent success of Hokato Hotozhe Sema, who secured a bronze medal at the Paralympic Games 2024.
Addressing the youth, he emphasized the importance of obeying their parents and seeking the blessings of elders. Additionally, he called upon parents to pray for the success of their children, which, he said, would contribute to societal progress. For the overall development of the state, he stressed the significance of prayer in fostering growth among the youth and the community.
In his welcome address, youth president Pothita Tetseo encouraged participants to put in their best efforts, emphasizing the importance of representing the village at the area level. He described the sports meet as an opportunity to showcase talent and foster unity among the youth.
Village Council Chairman Khusahu Medeo appreciated the efforts of the youth in organizing the sports meet, recognizing it as a valuable platform for young people to showcase their talents. However, he proposed that the event be held quinquennially instead of biennially, given the current scope of the meet being limited to Phek District.
He contrasted this with earlier times when the youth represented the state in national events. He explained that the biennial format comes with significant financial constraints and limitations, which could be alleviated by extending the interval between events. Medeo also encouraged the participants to give their best efforts in their respective competitions.
The five participating khels are Tetseotso, Rekhromi, Cekumi, Sazumi, and Phuyoba. On day-1, track and field events, including the 100m sprint, 200m dash, shot put, and long jump, commenced on the first day. The sports meet will conclude on Thursday, with Kethoseyi Rhakho, Secretary of VDB Phuyoba, as the valedictory guest.
