LONGLENG, JUNE 8 (MExN): The 68th Phom Day was observed in Longleng on June 6.
Deputy Commissioner, Longleng, M Shayung Phom in his message called upon the citizens of the Phom community to extend all physical, moral and material support to the frontline warriors. He was speaking as Special Guest during the occasion at Phom Day site, Police Headquarter, Longleng.
Maintaining that the first generation of modern Phoms stopped the head hunting practice while the next generations focused on literacy and tried to bring social changes, the DC said despite many challenge the immediate battle at the moment staring at us is the global COVID-19 pandemic.
“We will swim or sink together because the virus does not see our religion, nationality, gender, political party affiliation, denomination etc. It will affect any one of us so let us all leave behind our cynicism and fight the virus united and determinedly,” he added.
Shayung also urged the people to appreciate those in the quarantine centers because they have been confined in isolation for weeks together not because they are confirmed of infection but to stop community transmission in case they are infected by the virus.
The DC also launched a Phom Day Video on YouTube titled ‘Sharing Peace Within.’
Earlier, invocation was pronounced by Nyemla, Associate Pastor (Women), LTBC followed by flag hoisting by the Special Guest; and Lord’s Prayer song and words of gratitude by the President of Phom Peoples Council (PPC). The program concluded with benediction by Tialemba Phom, Executive Secretary, PBCA, Longleng. The program was chaired by A Mane, President, PSC.
The 68th Phom Day was observed by the leaders of the Phom community in Longleng amid lockdown by strictly maintaining the SOP of the Government on COVID-19. Phom Day marks the end of the head hunting era and the beginning of peace and harmony among the Phom community.
A DIPR report informed that Phom Day marks the Phome community coming together on June 6, 1952 to pledge loyalty to the government.
“Phom Day gave new national identity by coming out of the village mindset to the level of tribe, state, nation and globally. Phom Day is a unique day that has broadened the mental horizon of the Phom community towards peace and development,” the DIPR report added.
