
Imphal, July 13 (NNN): A total of 7 villages have been inundated in Imphal West district after Imphal River breached its embankment at Khaidem in Wangoi assembly constituency last night around 11:30 pm. About 30 feet width of embankment was seen opened initially but after about two hours, the width of the opening became about 150 feet, villagers said. Work to mend the breached embankment is yet to start as the river is not receding. Wangoi Khaidem, Huidrom and Chirai villages are the worst affected ones. A large area of agricultural land has also been submerged. Affected villagers are now taking refuge at various community halls. Since last month people in the Manipur valley has been facing undue hardship due to the floods. Thoubal district, Imphal East district and some places in Imphal West district were severely affected by the flood as rivers breached embankments in the beginning of this month. It may be noted here that several houses at Lilong Haoreibi Awang Leikai were swept away as Imphal River breached its embankment on July 2. A large number of people were rendered homeless by the flood in Lilong area. Around 8 houses were damaged by the flood in Lilong Haoreibi Leikai on July 2.
