71% deaths worldwide due to non communicable diseases

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 20 (MExN): The launching of the Health Awareness Programme on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) was held at CMO’s conference hall, Dimapur on October 20. 

Health Awareness Programme on NCD is under the partnership programme between the Department of Health and Family Welfare, State Rural Livelihood Mission (NSRLM), and Christian Institute of Health Science Research (CIHSR). The programme on NCD will be initially implemented in Medziphema Block under Chümoukedima District.

Presenting the introduction to NCD awareness programme, Dr Alemwabang Aier, State Programme Officer, National Programme for NCD stated that NCD are chronic in nature and as the name suggest it is non-contagious therefore not transmissible from one person to other. However it is the leading cause of all deaths worldwide. Death due to NCD in the world is in the magnitude of 71% (WHO 2019) of all deaths. In the same way in India, death due to NCD is around 63 % (WHO 2018), Dr Aier revealed.  

He further stated that NCD may include wide spectrum of medical disorders like cancers, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases and stroke, chronic kidney diseases, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, asthma. NCDs cause significant morbidity and mortality, both in urban and rural population and across all socio-economic strata with considerable loss in potentially productive years of life. NCDs are also responsible for the maximum out of pocket expenditure on health.

M Rollan Lotha, Chief Operating Officer stated that NSRLM has been initiated in 2012 and has been working with women in rural areas to empower them socio-economically through sustainable income generation. He stated that decade ago, our women did not have any concept of saving and we more engaged in agriculture than men. NSRLM aims to make women more enterprising, enhance their purchasing power and be a part of decision making in the society. He stated that 27 villages under Medziphema Block are currently covered and more villages will be added soon.

Head of Department, Community Health, CIHSR, Dr Atsung Aier said the NCD awareness programme aims to build awareness among communities to take preventive, promotive, and curative measures for the treatment of NCD and empower the community groups to take proactive stand to prevent and control NCDs through adoption of lifestyle changes. 

The programme also aims to provide early diagnosis and referral loop mapping which is to ensure all beneficiaries are cared for and tracked. It also aims to initiate population based integrated NCD screening programme through existing health machinery. He further discussed the risk factors and level of NCD prevention and management, operational strategies, TRAINING and development of the programme and indicators to show the progress of the programme.

Earlier, Chief Medical Officer Dimapur, Dr Limatula Aier, delivered the welcome address and Dr Temjensunep, SMO CHC Medziphema gave the vote of thanks.
