CHÜMOUKEDIMA, NOVEMBER 1 (MExN): The North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) held its 9th Graduation Day on November 1, 2024, at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall in Chümoukedima, Nagaland. The ceremony celebrated the achievements of its Master of Social Work (MSW) graduates with Dr D. Gnanadurai, Vice Chancellor of St. Joseph University, as the chief guest, and M. Rollan Lotha, Chief Operating Officer of the NSRLM, as the special guest.

In his address, Dr Gnanadurai inspired the graduates to embrace peace and environmental responsibility. He congratulated them on their accomplishments and emphasized the vital role social workers play in translating theoretical knowledge into transformative actions. Drawing inspiration from Ratan Tata's life, he encouraged graduates to maintain humility and resilience. Dr Gnanadurai highlighted the importance of fostering inner peace and urged graduates to consider their legacy in environmental conservation, redefining success as a commitment to peace and the well-being of the earth.

Special guest M. Rollan Lotha spoke on the transformative potential of social work in both personal and community contexts. He underscored that being a good person is fundamental to the profession, encouraging graduates to maintain a continuous learning mindset and focus on making a difference in their communities. Highlighting the government’s recognition of social work’s importance, Lotha urged collaborations with government bodies and NGOs for campus recruitment, noting that these partnerships are valuable for advancing community development.

Advocating for the "Back to Land" initiative, he suggested reconnecting with traditional practices as a solution to unemployment. Lotha also praised NEISSR’s Social Entrepreneurship Specialization, calling for a shift towards an enterprise-driven economy in Nagaland.

Dr Fr. C.P Anto, Principal of NEISSR, welcomed attendees and acknowledged the dedication of faculty and staff in shaping the graduates. Reflecting on NEISSR's decade-long journey, he celebrated its role as Nagaland's first MSW college and India's first to offer a specialization in Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies. He urged graduates to apply universal values of social work to advocate for truth, peace, and justice.

The ceremony recognized outstanding students, with Vevolü Kulla-O awarded Class Topper, James Phanungkiu named Best Student, Pezangulie Suokhrie honored as Philanthropist, Ethutsolo Naro for Best Research, and Tsulula K for Best Field Work. Additionally, Khenishe K Sumi was recognized for being the first NEISSR student to pass the JRF exam.

Best Student awardee James Phanungkiu expressed gratitude to his family, mentors, and God. He reflected on his transformative two-year journey and encouraged juniors to seize opportunities and prepare for future leadership roles.

The program was chaired by Tshekukhro-u Akami and Alongba T Sangtam, with a blessing from Rev. Fr. Chacko Karinthayil, a Governing Board Member. The event included a multimedia presentation and a special song by Joyba Sangtam and the NEISSR choir. Dr Abel Ariina facilitated the graduates, while Rev. Fr. G.L. Khing delivered the vote of thanks. A total of 87 students graduated with a Master of Social Work degree.
