Abu Metha unveils tournament poster, mascot, theme song

The official unveiling ceremony of Poster, Mascot and Theme Song for the upcoming 9th Capt N Kengurüse, MVC Memorial Football Tournament 2025 took place today at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma.

The tournament, scheduled for October 22 to November 6 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima, is organised by Assam Rifles in collaboration with Nagaland Football Association (NFA) under the aegis of Operation Sadbhavana, Spear Corps.

Gracing the unveiling ceremony, Abu Metha, Advisor to Chief Minister of Nagaland, honoured the brave and courageous act of Capt Neikezhakuo Kengurüse and described him as a legendary figure.
“He gave his everything, made supreme sacrifice, protecting our borders, fighting for our flag and fighting for our nation,” Metha said.

Metha, who is also Chairman, Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland and vice president Athletics Federation of India, thanked the Assam Rifles and Armed Forces for taking the initiative of organizing Capt N Kengurüse, MVC Memorial Football Tournament in his honour.

He congratulated the Armed Forces for using this platform to bring people together, to recognize excellence and success, and to give opportunity to the young footballers of Nagaland to strive for their dreams and aspirations.

Maintaining that sport has the power to unify the people, he said that sport brings people, nation, and communities together.

The universal language of sport is excellence and success, Metha said and urged upon the young people to work hard to excel.

Stating that the modern society needs a better partnership between civil and military forces, he said “Together, we have to collaborate towards peace. Together, we have to partner so that we achieve progress and development.”

If all sections work together as one, I am sure we will reach our destination of true peace, Metha said.

“Sportsmanship is not only about winning”
MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso said that Captain Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kargil War, continues to shine as a symbol of bravery, humility, and selfless service.
“Through this football tournament, we are keeping his spirit alive, reminding our youth that true victory is not measured only by medals or trophies, but by the character we build and the values we uphold.”

He said that sport, especially football, has a language of its own, a language that speaks of teamwork, discipline and fair play.

Dr. Rhiitso acknowledged the tremendous efforts of the Assam Rifles, the Nagaland Football Association and all partners who have made this football tournament possible.

Your work not only honours the memory of a brave soldier but also builds a bridge between the armed forces and the people they serve, he said.

Let us also remember that sportsmanship is not only about winning. It is about lifting others up, playing with honour, and showing gratitude- just as Captain Kengurüse lifted the pride of an entire state through his courage and service, he said.

May this tournament spread the spirit of hope, togetherness and youthful energy across every corner of Nagaland, Dr. Rhütso added.

Brigadier SK Palande, Deputy Inspector General, IGAR (North), also addressed the gathering and reiterated the Assam Rifles’ commitment to fostering youth development, sportsmanship and community bonding through sports initiatives.

Neiselie Kengurüse, father of Capt Neikezhakuo Kengurüse also addressed the gathering.

The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the Official Mascot – “The Mithun Warrior”, symbolising strength, unity and resilience.

The tournament Theme Song, composed by “Chaturth Pancham” Jazz Band of 45 Assam Rifles, captured the spirit of pride, passion and perseverance that defines the tournament.

Altogether, 20 teams have confirmed their participation in this tournament.

The champion will carry a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh along with trophy. 1st runner- up will get Rs. 1.5 lakh while 2nd and 3rd runner up will be awarded with Rs. 75,000 and Rs. 50,000 respectively.
