Longol FC, FC Simlai win opening matches
Medziphema, April 4 (MExN): The 9th edition of the Frolic Cup, a biennial football tournament organized by Frolic Club, kicked off today at Local Ground, Medziphema, featuring 21 teams vying for the coveted trophy.
The opening ceremony was graced by P James Swu, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Medziphema, as the special guest.
Recalling his 15-year-long association with the Frolic Club, Swu lauded the Club’s consistent efforts in promoting football and nurturing local talent. He highlighted that 14 players from the Medziphema area recently participated in the Nagaland Super League, with others in the past having featured in the I-League and Subroto Cup.
In his address, Swu emphasized the importance of discipline in sports, stating, “Discipline will be the only source from where success will follow.” He also read out a message from Shri Küzholüzo (Azo) Nienü, MLA and Leader of the Naga People’s Front (NPF), for the occasion.
In the tournament opener, Longol FC staged a second-half comeback to defeat Eimi Sporting Club 3-2. Eimi SC had dominated the first half with goals from Nikato, who scored with a long-range strike, and Longoulen with a clean finish. However, Longol FC returned stronger after the break, with Ngulminthang scoring once and Haochon netting a brace to secure the win.
In the afternoon fixture, FC Simlai overpowered Skylight FC with a commanding 5-1 victory. Despite an early lead from Skylight’s Pagin in the 15th minute, Simlai equalized in the 35th minute through Ngulgouhad. The second half saw Simlai’s attacking force come alive with goals from Ngulgoulal (39’), Moses (51’), Henkhohao (56’), and Lamginmang (65’).
