Tuensang Police initiates road safety classes for traffic violators

Dimapur | April 21

From riding without helmets to using mobile phones while on the move, to parking violations and driving under influence, the list of traffic violations is endless.

In Tuensang, the case is no different. With multiple violations and accidents caused by non-adherence to traffic rules, the Tuensang Police has finally decided to address the issue for good.

A weekly traffic class for violators has been initiated in an attempt to prevent traffic violations and promote road safety in the district.

“A new initiative that believes in teaching the right thing to prevent further violations,” stated the Tuensang Police in its Twitter update on April 20.

Speaking to The Morung Express, Tuensang police traffic in-charge Imlimadong Chang said that the initiative was a step towards making the roads in Tuensang safer for the citizens.

While the initiative was started last month, it was highlighted on April 20 through the department’s social media post. It received mass appreciation from social media users who commended the Tuensang Police and highlighted the need for similar steps in other districts as well.

Surprise checking is being conducted throughout the week and violators are called for classes on Saturday and being given lessons on the Motor Vehicle Amendment Act 2019.

The traffic personnel check those riding two wheelers without helmets, driving without proper vehicle documents etc. Breath analyzers are also being used to check those driving under the influence of alcohol.

Chang informed that the first class around 4 weeks ago had about 20 violators in attendance. However, in the following weeks, the number of violators has decreased, he said, adding that this may be a positive indication.

“The idea to impart classes was with the main objective of educating the public on road safety. The violators are identified from random checking. Gradually, we are witnessing a decline in number of violators, so that must mean the message is reaching the public,” he shared optimistically.

Basic lessons about traffic rules, violations, road discipline, Motor Vehicles Act, and rules related to riding and driving are being taught in the classes.

While the classes are being held for spreading awareness, the Tuensang Police is also serious about habitual offenders. Details of the violators are being recorded and the lessons are being imparted to first time violators. On the second offense, they will be penalized as per the law, Chang informed.

Meanwhile, on being asked about the duration of the initiative, Chang informed that they will continue the drive for as long as possible. “The public in town areas may be aware by now, but there will also be people from far-flung areas who are not aware of the rules and safe practices,” he reasoned.

In the end, all efforts are meant to benefit the public. Many seem to be unaware of the Motor Vehicle Act, traffic rules and road safety practices, Chang shared. We will continue our pursuit to educate the public and make the roads safe, he added.
