Kohima, April 7 (MExN): The Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM) has expressed deep sorrow and strong condemnation over the killing of Imrongsungba Imchen of Longkhum village in the run-up to the by-election in 28 A/C Koridang on April 5, terming the act as a “grave violation of the election code of conduct” and “an inhumane outrage against humanity.”
In a statement issued by its Executive Secretary Rev Temsü Jamir, ABAM stated that by-elections are a cornerstone of democracy, providing citizens the opportunity to freely choose their leaders, and asserted that “any attempt to manipulate or disrupt this democratic process through violence undermines the very foundation of democratic values.” It further stated that “a leader elected through fear and bloodshed cannot be considered legitimate.”
ABAM said it had, “in the name of God,” strongly warned and cautioned all concerned against resorting to violence, reminding them of the serious moral and social consequences of such actions. “Yet, sadly, our people have once again failed to adhere to the Election Code of Conduct,” it added, expressing “deep sense of remorse and regret” while praying for God’s mercy upon the land and its people.
The organisation conveyed its condolences to the bereaved family, stating, “Their loss is profound, and we share in their grief,” and prayed that they may find strength and comfort in the solidarity of the community and in the assurance that justice will be pursued.
ABAM also stated that it trusts the authorities to ensure that justice will be delivered “swiftly and fairly,” while urging law enforcement agencies to maintain strict vigilance to prevent further untoward incidents and uphold peace and security across the constituency.
Further, it called upon political parties and candidates to uphold “the principles of peace, fairness, and respect for human life,” and refrain from actions that incite violence. It also urged citizens to condemn the act and “shun violence in all its forms,” stating, “Refrain violence and stand firm for a clean, peaceful, and democratic election.”
Reiterating that democracy thrives only when elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace, fairness, and respect for human dignity, ABAM stated that “violence has no place in the electoral process.”
The statement concluded with a prayer for “God’s divine protection” upon the people of 28 Koridang A/C, expressing hope that peace would prevail and guide the by-election process in fairness and harmony.
