Dimapur | July 25

In line with their demand for a separate district out of Mon district since 2008-09, the public of Aboi ADC headquarter under the banner of the Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) has renewed the demand, stating that the main objective was for administrative convenience and economic development of the area.

This time around, the ADDC has requested the State government to declare Aboi as a separate district on the occasion of India’s Independence Day on August 15, 2021.

Addressing media persons at Hotel Acacia, Dimapur on July 25, ADDC Convenor Manpon Changkap claimed that, as far as according district status was concerned, Aboi stood at number 1 while Noklak was at number 2, but added that the latter was recognized first.

He said the Committee had apprised the State government on many occasions with the last meeting held in January this year resulting in positive response; but things were yet to materialize.

Buttressing the point of demand, he said Mon district has 9 Assembly Constituencies out of which four falls under Aboi area.

Former MP Lok Sabha Wangyuh Konyak who was also the first Convenor, ADDC informed that the total Konyak population is 2.60 lakh, out of which 1.20 lakh comes under Aboi area. Wangyuh said Aboi is placed in the heartland of Konyak land and has the consent as well as ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the neighbouring villages and tribes such as Chang, Khiamniungan, Yimchunger, Phom, Sangtam and the ENPO as well with regard to the demand for a separate district.

Maintaining that the oldest town in the State is Aboi which falls under a vast area of Mon district with one DC and one SP, the former MP said that managing the law and order situation and monitoring developmental activities were difficult.
He reiterated the stand of Aboi public to stand by and be under their apex body- the Konyak Union in all matters concerning the community even after separate district status is accorded.
