Home minister, G. Kaito Aye has expressed serious concern over absenteeism in government offices and suggested shouldering more responsibilities to the employees to ensure regular attendance.

“Absenteeism among departmental officers and in districts is an area of concern and in order to ensure attendance you will need to give more responsibilities to them,” the home minister told the Deputy Commissioners of the state during an interaction with them in the conference hall of the Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner, Banuo Z. Jamir, Kohima on Thursday.

Kaito stated that the DCs could work towards ensuring regular attendance of employees only if they were actively involved in the happenings of the district vis-a-vis departmental activities. The home minister noted that there was serious shortage of administrative officers in almost all the districts owing to which many officers have been given additional responsibilities. However, he told the DCs to encourage their junior officers to take the additional responsibility as an opportunity, rather than a burden.

Kaito lauded the DCs of the state for the leadership they provided in conducting one of the most peaceful elections in the state.

Also describing it as one of the “most efficiently conducted” polls, he urged them to continue providing the same leadership in administration of their respective districts.

Apart from the general administration of law and order, Kaito said, the role of a DC in the development process was extremely important and for which they need to work hand in hand in close coordination with all the departments. He urged the DCs to also work in close coordination with the police, army and Para military by remaining in constant touch with these agencies.

The home minister recognised peace as a prerequisite to development and said it should be the endeavour of all to ensure that peace is maintained at all cost. Towards this, Kaito said, intelligence collection needed to be improved. The home minister is expected to tour all the 11 district headquarters within the shortest possible time.

Officers from the Geology and Mining department also attended the meeting and expounded on the coal business and its scope in the state. Mining still in its nascent stage, the officials briefed the meeting on coal mining issues in Nagaland.
