Dimapur, August 8 (MExN): The alleged accused arrested for “fraudulently running a Facebook account and posing” as the Nagaland Advisor for Power Tovihoto Ayemi” was bought to Dimapur on August 7, the Dimapur police informed.
Tovihoto, through a tweet today, informed that the scammer had impersonated him on social media by using his photo to open a fake Facebook account and “had been seeking financial assistance from friends.”
“The prompt investigation by Dimapur Police and arresting the spammer within the shortest period is well appreciated and deserves wide admiration,” he said, particularly the Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur, Rothihu Tetseo and DCP Zone -II, Dimapur Aotula Imchen and the team that “travelled to the interior Punjab State and successfully apprehended the accused from the Punjab-Pakistan border area.”
According to a press release from Dimapur Police on August 7, the accused, identified as Sunil was arrested from Fazilka district in Punjab on August 6 by a police team from Sub-urban Police Station, Dimapur with assistance from the Punjab Police.
The accused had allegedly created a fake Facebook profile fronting as Ayemi to run a fund-raise scam and “multiple requests was made for online financial help from various people after fraudulently posting certain bank account numbers” via the account, it said.
He was booked under relevant sections of the IPC and the IT Act, it added.
