Add value to agri production for wealth growth - Azo

DIMAPUR, MARCH 17 (MExN): Farmers in Nagaland need to introduce added value to their crops to augment their wealth and sustainability, according to Agriculture Minister Kuzhuluzo Nienu. After inaugurating the Kuhuboto APMC multi-complex, Nienu promised he would earmark more funds for the completion of the three-storied multi complex and said he would look into the demand of setting up an SDAO office at the subdivision, depending on whether the criteria for the same is achieved.

Giving an example of added value, the Minister said surplus of potato could be utilized into making chips. But more practically, he said the ‘pitha mudhu’ industry was a perfect illustration of value addition as the water, rice and even the leftovers are made use of.

On the other hand, he asked farmers to work hard and added that the Government cannot make direct involvement into marketing. He asked the growers to abstain from the practice of “spoon-feeding”

Maintaining that agriculture is “our mainstay”, Azo said the government is planning to organize workshops on value addition.

Making special mention of Phek district, where a hue and cry on the price of ginger has been sounded, the Minister found it strange that while seedlings were provided at Rs 14-15 per kilo, the growers were complaining that they were being provided a retail price of Rs 6 per kg. It was also informed that ginger growers can sell their produce to Kuda Cold Storage at Dimapur at a price of Rs 6.50 p per kg.

Outlining the vision of the agricultural department, Commissioner and Secretary, N Zhase, said sustainable agriculture for food security for all Nagas, generation of employment and wealth and prosperity by 2020 is what they have in mind.

Joint Director (Marketing) C Mohzui, adding to what other speakers said, exhorted that more Nagas need to be involved in entrepreneurship for creation of local wealth.

Presenting the building report and presentation, Chairman of the APMC, Tokuho Neho, said more funds were required to complete the ongoing construction works. Besides speeches, the programme was marked by colorful dances and a buffet.
