Addressing discrimination against Northeasterners

Jubika A Yepthomi

I wish to draw attention to the discrimination faced by individuals from the Northeast, including Nagaland and other regions across India.

Such discrimination exposes them to unfair stereotypes and prejudice based solely on their appearance. This often leads to our people being unfairly judged, marginalized, and stereotyped. Tragically, we have witnessed the loss of our brothers and sisters due to harassment and racial bias.

As Nagas and Northeasterners, we take pride in our heritage, traditions, and values. Every individual deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and equality, regardless of where they come from.

Discrimination not only harms individuals but also creates a deep sense of alienation, affecting education, employment, and social well-being.

I especially appeal to those living in mainland India to understand the unique challenges faced by Northeasterners. It is essential to treat everyone with fairness, respect, harmony, and empathy.
To address this issue, I humbly suggest the following measures:

Awareness and Sensitization: Conduct campaigns in schools, workplaces, and public spaces to educate people about the culture, traditions, and identity of Northeastern communities.

Strict Enforcement of Laws: Ensure anti-discrimination and anti-racism laws are properly implemented, and violations are addressed promptly.

Encourage Inclusion: Promote equal opportunities in education, employment, and professional environments to foster inclusivity.

Dialogue and Community Engagement: Create platforms for interaction between communities to build understanding and break harmful stereotypes.

Media Responsibility: Encourage fair and accurate representation of Northeasterners in media, avoiding reinforcement of stereotypes.

Let us strive for a society where individuals are judged by their character, not by labels or identity-based prejudice. I sincerely hope this message will raise awareness and inspire meaningful change.
