Advisor for School Education and State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT), Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome conducted an inspection visit to the Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Wokha to review ongoing infrastructural development initiatives in the district on May 26.
Prior to the site visit, a high-level meeting was convened at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Wokha. Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Wokha, Vineet Kumar, IAS, the meeting brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on the state of government school infrastructure and the progress of the Lighthouse School Complex under the NECTAR project.
In his address, Dr Yhome highlighted the importance of the Lighthouse School initiative and called upon all stakeholders to actively contribute towards revitalising government schools. Referring specifically to GHSS Wokha, which is undergoing large-scale development, he expressed concern over the diminishing status of public schools, attributing it to a decline in community engagement. He reminded attendees that these institutions have historically nurtured bureaucrats and distinguished personalities and therefore deserve renewed commitment.

A pressing issue discussed during the meeting was the encroachment of school land at GHSS Wokha. Originally gifted 11.85 acres by local landowners, the school reportedly retains only 4.15 acres today.
Dr Yhome urged civil society organisations and concerned stakeholders to safeguard the land, stressing its significance to the local community. He also assured support for initiating legal procedures if deemed necessary.
During the inspection of the NEP Lighthouse School Complex project, Dr Yhome observed that the foundation for a hostel had been laid on the school playground. He emphasised that a school without a playground denies students an essential element of their educational experience. Following an on-site verification, he instructed the authorities to relocate the construction by demolishing disused structures and ensuring proper segregation of hostel facilities for boys and girls.
Dr Yhome underlined the potential of Wokha—owing to its central location and historical relevance—to become a hub for major educational initiatives. He asserted that investment in educational infrastructure today would yield significant long-term benefits for future generations.
The Advisor was accompanied by Dr. Chumben Murry, Advisor to the Chief Minister of Nagaland; the Commissioner Secretary for Education and SCERT; the State Mission Director for Samagra Shiksha; and the Principal Director of School Education. The meeting was also attended by members of the District Committee for Lighthouse School Complex (DCLSC), representatives from Lotha Hoho, Lotha Eloe Hoho, Lotha Students’ Union, town councillors, GHSS Wokha Principal, Wokha Village Council chairman, and original land donors.
Earlier in the meeting, Dr Yhome reiterated his commitment to transforming government schools and encouraged active community participation, noting that such involvement would help mitigate the growing cost of private education.
Dr Chumben Murry praised Dr Yhome’s proactive efforts in strengthening government schools and echoed his vision for revitalising public education. Representatives from Lotha Hoho, the Lotha Students’ Union, and land donors expressed gratitude for Dr. Yhome’s visit and his resolve to address educational challenges in the district.
