Agri students urged to bring innovation in agriculture sector

DIMAPUR, JUNE 14 (MExN): The School of Agricultural Sciences, Nagaland University (NU: SAS), Medziphema Campus held its 29th parting social on June 13, in the multi-purpose hall, NU: SAS with Temjen Imna Along, Minister of Tourism & Higher Education as the special guest. 

Speaking on the occasion, Imna Along urged the students to play a vital role in educating the farmers and to uplift the status of agriculture in our country. He stressed on the issue of lack of governments jobs in the state and encouraged the students to come up with innovative ideas in the agriculture sector for self employment and also to employ others. 

He also stated that Nagaland may not be able to compete in terms of huge production of agricultural crops with the rest of India and also the world but possess the resources to produce good quality, premium crops of high value. He opined that Nagaland could find a niche in quality produce and products but that it requires that all stakeholders to collaborate and work in tandem. The annual school magazine Hill Agri was also released by the Higher Education Minister. 

Prof L Daiho, Dean exhorted the outgoing students that there is an increase in food demand with the increasing population and that there is a huge gap between the supply and demand. Therefore, he encouraged the students to take responsibility as agriculture graduates to work towards food production and productivity and help our state to attain food security.
Prof Pauline Alila, Associate Dean, Students’ Welfare delivered the welcome address. 

Speeches were also delivered by the outgoing students where Wenlang M Konyak spoke on behalf of B. Sc 4th year and Reshmi Das on behalf of the M. Sc 2nd years. Speech on behalf of the remaining students was delivered by Chichum Thonger, B. Sc 3rd year.
