AI, an opportunity and a challenge to the media

During the Mokokchung Press Club’s (MPC) observation of National Press Day at the conference hall of Hotel Whispering Winds, Mokokchung, President, Limalenden Longkumer said that it is a day to reflect upon the challenges, achievements, and responsibilities that come with the power of journalism. He contemplated the profound transformations in the world and the media's evolution over the years, culminating in the present challenge posed by Artificial Intelligence. 

He underscored AI as both an opportunity and a challenge, cautioning, “On one hand, AI has empowered journalists with tools for data analysis, fact-checking, and content creation, enhancing the efficiency of newsrooms. On the other hand, it raises questions about the ethical use of AI, and the potential for biased algorithms, as well as the implications for job roles within the media industry – and, most importantly, the potential erosion of human judgment in the journalistic process."

He asserted that AI cannot replace “empathy and human touch” and urged the press fraternity to hold the essence of the media, that is, to inform, educate and hold the powerful accountable. 

Meanwhile, highlighting the necessity for a 'symbiotic relationship' between the press and civil society organizations, Longkumer reinforced the media's role in informing and educating society while unwaveringly upholding the truth.

Er T Imlisunep Ao, Principal of ITI Mokokchung and the thematic speaker expressed that effective use of AI is a powerful tool for media and harnessing AI's potential can greatly benefit Mokokchung. Ao also envisioned the establishment of a 'Skill University' in the district.

Stating that Mokokchung Press has so far upheld and maintained its integrity and has earned people’s trust, he hoped the press fraternity will continue to uphold the truth and be ‘righteous’ in their reports.

Dr. Limasenla Jamir, Assistant Professor of FAC, shared her journalistic journey, and viewed, “the smarter the journalist, the smarter the society is.” She urged emerging journalists to remain curious, ask questions, keenly observe, take accountability for errors, and rectify them.

Tialemba Ao, DPRO, Mokokchung, expressed eagerness to collaborate with the press fraternity in reflecting the sentiments of the people to the government. He acknowledged the indispensable role of the press in disseminating information to grassroots levels, seeking continued cooperation.

Sashimeren Jamir, Secretary of MPC delivered the vote of thanks, and the program was chaired by Temjennaro Longhcar.

The event witnessed the participation of members from several civil society organizations including Watsü Mungdang, All Ward Union Mokokchung Town (AWUMT), Ao Students’ Conference (AKM), and Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT).
