New Delhi, April 27 (MExN): The Laskar Committee has submitted its report to the Minority Department of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) today suggesting new avenues of functioning in the North East region. The Committee suggested “greater representation to Christians belonging to the NE region,” in the AICC Minority Department as well as appoint Christian persons as chairperson of the Minority Departments of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram PCCs. It has also made recommendations for creation of a North East Congress Minority Coordination Committee, North East Advisory Committee, Vigilance Committee in the Minority Department of each PCC of the region, ‘Legal Aid Committee’ in the Minority Departments at the state and district levels in all the states of North East. The chairperson of the AICC Minority Department had entrusted Rejaul Karim Laskar, Congress ideologue from Assam, to develop a strategy for attracting religious minorities (Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, etc) towards the Congress party. He submitted a 148-page report after visiting the eight states of the region and holding interactions with Congress Chief Ministers, Congress Legislature Party Leaders, State Congress Presidents, and other senior leaders of the Congress party. Laskar, who sent a press release to inform the same, further recommended persons belonging to Christian community to be appointed as Chairpersons of the Minority Department of Tinsukia, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, and Udalguri Districts of Assam; All the Districts of Nagaland; Senapati, Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Ukhrul and Chandel Districts of Manipur; and East Kameng, Papum Pare, Tirap, and Kurung Kumey Districts of Arunachal Pradesh. It also suggested holding an “Annual North East Dialogue” by the AICC Minority Department.
