AKM directs migrants to leave Mokokchung

Alarm bells over presence of Islamic militants

Mokokchung, May 22 (MExN): Turning its attention towards illegal immigrants in Mokokchung district, the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) today directed migrants who arrived in the district after 2000 till date to leave the district ‘for a short time,’ while the Students’ Conference carry out a verification and rectification exercise from June 11 to July 11 next on the drive ‘Survival 2007’.

This latest move of the apex students’ organisation of the Ao community comes in the common interest of the public for the protection of culture, custom and economy of the people of the district, stated a press statement issued by AKM president, Aodangnok and general secretary, Imlimeren.

Besides, informing the migrants entering into the district after 2000 to leave for a ‘time-being,’ the AKM also requested the district administration not to extend Inner Line Permit (ILP) for the effective implementation of the drive. It also warned that the risk of violating the decision and directive given from the office by anyone shall be borne by the individual concerned. Furthermore, the AKM directed all the concerned non-locals who came to Mokokchung before 2000 to keep all necessary documents related to ILP which should be furnished before the AKM when informed to do so.

The president of AKM, Aodangnok in a telephonic conversation, said that the latest move of the students’ body comes after thorough deliberations at two or three meetings of the AKM. He said that over the last few years, the number of migrants have increased tremendously thereby affecting the economy of the district, with domination of market thereby leaving the local youths with little avenues to take on entrepreneurial initiatives.

He asserted that the AKM is determined to carry out this ‘Survival 2007’ till the end.

One concerned citizen of the town whole-heartedly supported the latest AKM move, and even added that the migrants are encouraging corruption through bribing the officers to gain entry. He said that there is a very strong suspicion about the presence of Islamic militants and Al Qaeda activists. He alleged nexus between the Islamic terrorists and one of the largest telephone companies in the district (the district has three telecom companies). He said that whenever these ‘terrorist connected VIP’ enters the district, the telephone line always breaks down, and that it is only after they pass through that they come to know that the terrorists have passed through.

Another concerned citizen said that Naga women married to the migrants are not allowed to send their children to any society related with Christianity, while still another alleged that local girls employed in the shops owned by ‘Mias’ are abused by the owners.

However, despite everything, the latest move of the Ao Students’ Conference is sure to create a flurry like before when different students’ bodies tried to take up the issue; with most of the illegal Bangladeshi migrants having the citizenship of Assam’ Kamriganj and Silchar districts, the Assam Government may also intervene like before in the past. “It’s now or never, these Bangladeshis having Kamriganj and Silchar citizenship are nothing but just a time bomb in the society,” said one concerned citizen.
