Mokokchung, April 23 (MExN): The Ao Kaketshir Mungdang (AKM) has appealed to the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung to intervene in the ongoing closure of Government High School (GHS) Longkhum, which has remained shut since February 27, 2026.
In a representation addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, AKM stated that the closure is due to a dispute over the appointment of fourth grade staff. It expressed concern that the school has remained closed for over 50 days, affecting more than 50 enrolled students.
"It is a matter of grave concern that the school has now been closed for more than 50 days, severely affecting the academic progress of the students," the representation stated.
AKM further highlighted the conditions under which classes are currently being conducted.
"With the high school non-functional, classes are being conducted in highly inadequate and unsuitable environments," it stated.
"At present, students are compelled to attend classes at the residence of one of the teachers, with some classes even being held in the kitchen. Such conditions are far from conducive to a proper learning environment and raise concerns about both the dignity and effectiveness of the education being imparted."
It added that attempts to shift classes to a nearby primary school were unsuccessful.
"The classrooms in the primary school are designed for younger children and are too small to accommodate high school students. As a result, overcrowding and discomfort have made it impossible to conduct classes efficiently."
AKM maintained that the situation has disrupted the academic environment and caused hardship to students.
"This situation has severely disrupted the academic atmosphere and is causing immense hardship for the students, who are being denied their right to a proper and structured education."
The organisation appealed to the district administration to intervene at the earliest and facilitate a fair and amicable resolution between all stakeholders.
"Immediate steps may kindly be taken to ensure the reopening of the school so that the students can resume their classes without further delay," AKM stated.
It also conveyed its willingness to extend cooperation in resolving the matter, while expressing hope for prompt action from the authorities.
