Mon, July 11 (MExN): MLA of 48 Moka Assembly Constituency and SDPDB Chairman, Tobu, A Nyamnyei Konyak on Saturday expressed grief over the Mon-Tobu Nagaland State Transport (NST) bus accident that occurred on July 9 at Ukha Changkhong village on the Mon-Tobu road, in which one passenger was killed and several others were critically injured.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved family, Konyak strongly condemned the alleged reckless conduct of the driver, claiming that the vehicle was being operated under the influence of illegal intoxicating substances. He said such gross negligence was unacceptable and called for the strictest action under the law against those responsible.
The legislator also referred to a representation submitted by the Tobu Area Students' Union to the Station Superintendent of NST, Mon, on May 31, 2025, seeking the replacement of the driver over allegations of repeated substance abuse and his involvement in a minor accident on May 29, 2025. He alleged that no action had been taken by the department despite the complaint.
Konyak said the latest accident had deeply shaken the people of the 48 Moka and 55 Tobu Assembly constituencies and raised serious concerns over passenger safety, accountability and the functioning of the Nagaland State Transport.
He urged the law enforcement authorities to conduct a fair, transparent and time-bound inquiry into the incident and ensure that all those found responsible are held accountable.
The MLA also demanded that the Nagaland government provide adequate ex gratia compensation to the family of the deceased and extend immediate financial assistance to the injured passengers.
Describing the NST bus service as the lifeline of the Tobu and Moka constituencies, he said it provides affordable and dependable transport for students, patients, government employees, traders and the general public. Any prolonged suspension of the service, he said, would severely disrupt daily life and economic activities in the area.
Konyak appealed to the concerned department and the state government to restore the Mon-Tobu NST bus service at the earliest after ensuring all necessary safety measures are in place.
On behalf of the people of the Tobu and Moka constituencies, he conveyed his deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased and wished the injured passengers a speedy and complete recovery.
