KOHIMA, MARCH 19 (MExN): The Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Council (AKMWC) has issued an open letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, urging immediate action to address the growing issue of unleashed dogs within the city.
The letter highlights a recent incident on March 15, 2025, where a three-year-old child from Lower PWD Colony was allegedly mauled severely by an unleashed dog. The child is reported to be fighting for their life and has sustained permanent injuries.
In the letter, the AKMWC raised concerns over the effectiveness of current measures to manage the situation, noting that many Colony Councils have attempted to curb the menace of stray dogs, but their efforts were reportedly nullified by orders from the District Administration and the Kohima Municipal Corporation (KMC).
The association called for clarification on the number of dog kennels available to house impounded dogs and how many dog catchers are currently employed to manage the issue. Additionally, the group requested information on the steps taken to ensure the safety of Kohima’s citizens.
In its appeal, the AKMWC stressed the urgency of implementing effective measures to address the danger posed by unleashed dogs and called on the authorities to provide adequate compensation for the child who was attacked.
The association urged the concerned authorities to take swift and effective action to prevent further incidents and safeguard public safety.
