Rev Dr Vijay D’Souza during lecture on ‘The Linguistic Edge’ on September 8.

Kohima, September 10 (MExN): Alder College Kohima has conducted a lecture on ‘The Linguistic Edge: speaking your heritage language for a better, smarter future’ at Dr Setu Memorial Hall on September 8 last.
It was jointly organized by Department of Tenyidie and Department of English in collaboration with North Eastern Institute of Language and Culture (NEILAC), Guwahati, Assam.
Introduction of the guest speaker, Rev Dr Vijay D’Souza, Director (NEILAC) was done by Ketoulenuo Belho, English Department. The lecture was centered on the decline in use of indigenous languages across the world.
The guest speaker enumerated some factors leading to language endangerment such as direct oppression, language shaming, linguicide, mixed marriages, migration and other factors.
The main objective of the lecture includes creating awareness of the importance of one’s mother tongue, promoting respect and fostering interest of our native language or literature.
A question and answer session took place, followed by interaction between the guest speaker and the participants.
Rüünguso Kuotsu, Department of Tenyidie moderated the lecture session.
