Kohima, June 23 (MExN): A one-day conference of Watsu Mongdang, Kohima unit was held at Molu Ki, Kohima on June 22, 2013 with Chief Secretary, Nagaland, Alemtemshi Jamir, IAS, as the main speaker.

Speaking on the topic “Civil Bodies and Society- in the Naga Context” Alemtemshi said that mankind was first hunters and gatherers which was slowly turned into different types of society like horticulturist, agriculturist, industrialist and finally into an informed and knowledge society. He stated that during the early days the participation of women and men were equal but due to agriculture development, industrialization and the advancement of technology, production increased and mankind started dividing into different sections which also led the division of men and women.

He said that Watsu Mongdang is a legally registered body and therefore a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which was earlier started as a Voluntary Organization. He urged the women to know their responsibilities and rights.  Speaking on the participation of women in legislation and different organizations, he observed that reservation of seats for women alone will not solve the problem.  Calling upon the women for more participation he said that the world is only as big as we think it is and therefore urged them to think big,  as women are no less educated or inferior than men.

Sharing his view on the present trend in the society he asked the gathering that if the society is for the welfare of all, “Is it not fair to have equal participation of women and men?” Emergence and acceptance of equal participation of women and men is the need of the hour, he added.

Short speeches were also delivered by President, Kohima Aor Telongjem, S.Mar Aier and Alila Imkong wife of Minister for Health & Family Welfare.
