Kohima, October 13 (MExN): The general body meeting of the All Nagaland Counsellors Association (ANCA) was held on October 12 at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima under the chairmanship of Fr C Joseph, president ANCA.


The meeting marked the 6th anniversary of the Association founded by Dr Zavise Rume, who is the founder and first president of ANCA, a press release from the Association said.


Fr Joseph in his presidential address presented the achievements made by the Association during the last 6 years.
He praised the SCERT, Government of Nagaland on becoming the first SCERT in the whole country to introduce the Diploma in School Counselling since 2018.


He also appreciated St Joseph College, Jakhama for introducing Diploma in Counselling Psychology.


Fr Joseph hoped that the ANCA will play a proactive role in formulating policies and programs in counselling and that the state government take ANCA into confidence.


Dr Zavise Rume in his speech emphasised on the need for continuing education in counseling profession.


He said a one-time degree course studied in counselling does not make a person professional, and insisted upon the counsellors to continue to update and renew his or her professional knowledge and skills by publication, training, workshop, seminar, conference apart from regular practice.


He opined that it was not the counsellors who were weak or incompetent that demands a regular education in the profession, but it was the professionalism which was rapidly growing in today's world of professionalism that “demands us to keep ourselves updated with the latest knowledge and skills emerging in the present day of professionalism.”


Dr Rume suggested that the ANCA should continue to contribute towards making the Diploma course in School Counselling introduced in SCERT Nagaland a success.


The house had a discussion on draft Constitution and professional code of ethics for counsellors in Nagaland.


Major ethical issues discussed at the meeting included – protecting oneself from unprofessional practice, protecting members from judgmental attitude, not to talk ill of colleagues, backbiting, or making remarks.


The house unanimously agreed to invite all the Diploma holders and degree holders in counseling to be members of the Association.


Meanwhile, Dr Rume conducted the election of office bearers of the Association as the Convenor for the tenure of 3 years (2019-22).


The house unanimously elected Ikali Chophy as President, Kiketo Zhimo as Vice President, Temsümenla Mollier as General Secretary, Rokovituo Yosu as Information & Public Relations Secretary along with two other bearers, three executive members. The advisors comprise Rev Fr C Joseph, Dr Zavise Rume and Fr George Rino.
